The Ophthalmology Service
Mother Teresa University Hospital Center (QSUNT)
The Ophthalmology Service at the Mother Teresa University Hospital Center (QSUNT) is one of the most specialized and important structures in the country for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye diseases and the visual system. This service provides tertiary-level healthcare and serves as a referral center for patients from all over Albania and the region.
The Activities of the Ophthalmology Service
The Ophthalmology Service at QSUNT covers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, including:
- Each year, approximately ……. specialized visits are conducted in the consultation service. (You can fill in the number of visits as needed.)
- An average of 5,662 surgical interventions are performed annually in the operating room.
- Specialized consultations for eye diseases in children and adults.
- Advanced diagnostics with modern equipment such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), visual perimetry, eye biometrics, etc.
- Ophthalmic surgery for various pathologies such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal diseases, and refractive surgery.
- Emergency service 24/7 for ocular trauma and urgent vision cases.
- Outpatient treatment for chronic eye diseases, including the administration of intravitreal injections and laser therapy.
- Teaching and scientific research, as the service is part of the Faculty of Medicine and plays an important role in the training of specialist ophthalmologists.
The staff consists of experienced ophthalmologists, specialized nurses, and visual diagnostics technicians, who work together to provide high-quality, patient-centered care.
The History of the Service
The Ophthalmology Service was established as a university service alongside ORL in 1957. Since its establishment, it has been supported by prominent figures in Albanian medicine, such as Prof. Kristo Kristidhi, who was the head of the service until 1969, Prof. Besim Zyma, as the head of the department, and many other specialists.

Surgical intervention
For years, the Ophthalmology Service has successfully offered a wide range of eye surgeries using modern techniques. Since 2019 and onward, the hospital has provided the complete cataract treatment package, which continues to be successfully applied in this service. In addition, our service also performs treatment with intravitreal injections.
